Our History
The Hollywood International Film Festival (HIFF) was born from a passion to bring diverse voices, stories, and cultures to the forefront of global cinema. The idea was first conceived by Umar John, a filmmaker and visionary, who dreamt of creating a space where emerging and established filmmakers could come together to showcase their work and connect with audiences from all corners of the world.

The Dream Begins
In 2009, while living in Dubai, Umar John, a filmmaker and visionary, first dreamed of creating a platform that would showcase diverse voices in global cinema. His vision was to offer filmmakers from around the world an opportunity to share their stories, spark conversations, and connect with a worldwide audience. The dream of the Hollywood International Film Festival (HIFF) was born, rooted in the belief that cinema has the power to unite people and foster cultural understanding.

2010–2019 – Laying the Foundation
Over the next decade, Umar honed his craft as a filmmaker and built a strong network within the global film industry. His experiences as a filmmaker and graphic artist fueled his desire to bring the HIFF vision to life. During this time, Umar established Hummingbird Film Studios, a creative hub designed to support independent filmmakers and artists. These foundational years were spent gathering resources, refining the festival’s mission, and setting the stage for what would eventually become HIFF.

2020–2023 – Building Momentum
In 2020, Umar took a major step by establishing the non-profit organization Hummingbird Art and Culture Foundation LTD., which would serve as the parent organization for the festival. This move was a crucial milestone in realizing the dream of HIFF. The foundation set its sights on creating an inclusive, dynamic film festival that would celebrate new voices, bold stories, and innovative filmmaking.
Despite challenges, including the global pandemic, Umar and his team continued working toward the inaugural festival, building partnerships and developing the festival’s identity as a space for creative exploration and cultural exchange.
