Cinema auditorium arranged for an international awards programme

The FestivalHollywood International Film Festival

A meeting place
for cinema.

Independent stories. International perspectives. A shared room in which film can be seen, discussed and remembered.

Cinema can travel farther than its maker, speak across languages and make a private experience visible to strangers.

Hollywood International Film Festival exists to create the conditions for that encounter. We are building a serious international platform for independent work—one that brings the film, the filmmaker and the audience into the same cultural conversation. Our purpose is not simply to collect titles under a festival banner. It is to curate with intention, present with dignity and build relationships that continue after the screening ends.

The 2027 edition will be HIFF’s second official festival chapter. It is being developed for the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area, a region shaped by international communities, public institutions, educators, artists and globally engaged audiences. Exact dates and venue will be announced only after final confirmation.

Artists meet across cultures

The work travels farther when filmmakers can think together.

HIFF’s international purpose is not satisfied by placing flags beside film titles. We are building a setting where directors, cinematographers, writers, producers and audiences can compare process, question assumptions and create relationships that continue beyond one screening or one edition.

03 / Our principles

Clarity before spectacle

What we are
building toward.

01

Curatorial care

Films deserve more than a slot. They deserve context, thoughtful programming and an audience invited to engage with what the work is trying to do.

02

International openness

Language, nationality and prior release do not determine artistic value. The competition is designed as one field for global voices.

03

Independent courage

We seek films with a point of view—work made with conviction, whether it arrives from an experienced director or an emerging creative path.

04

Responsible recognition

Focused awards, transparent states and accurate public claims protect the credibility of filmmakers and the institution presenting them.

05

Learning in public

Masterclasses, talks and NextGen pathways position education as part of the festival experience rather than an isolated side programme.

06

Connection after the credits

Our ambition is an ecosystem in which a screening can begin a collaboration, mentorship, audience relationship or new creative possibility.

03 / Our history

The verified edition record

One beginning.
A wider horizon.

HIFF’s official festival story began in 2025. Rather than inflate that history, the new archive is being built carefully from official announcements and organizer-held records. The 2027 edition is the second official chapter: a fresh international step that respects the inaugural year while raising the standard of presentation, access and editorial depth.

2025

The inaugural edition

HIFF establishes its official festival record and recognizes an international group of independent films and filmmakers.

04 / The institution

Culture requires infrastructure.

Hollywood International Film Festival is organized by Hummingbird Art and Culture Foundation Ltd. The Foundation provides the institutional home for a festival designed to advance artistic exchange, independent voices, cultural understanding and public access to the arts.

External institutions, venues, sponsors and media organizations will be credited only according to verified roles. HIFF’s partnership model is being built for meaningful collaboration—education, access, programme support and audience experience—not borrowed prestige.

05 / Founder’s perspective

Umar (John) Farooq

“The distance between two worlds can sometimes be crossed in a single scene.”

HIFF’s founder brings a filmmaker’s understanding of how difficult it is to move a story from imagination to screen—and how important it is for that work to meet an audience with attention. His vision for HIFF is a festival that combines international ambition with human scale: filmmakers known by their work, audiences welcomed into the conversation, and emerging talent treated as part of cinema’s future rather than an afterthought.

06 / Connecting the world

A regional home · An international horizon

Global cinema becomes meaningful when connection becomes practical.

Stories travel with context

HIFF intends to introduce films without flattening the places, languages and experiences from which they come. Editorial notes, filmmaker voices, searchable cultural information and moderated dialogue will help audiences meet each work on its own terms.

Artists meet across distance

The festival’s international outlook is meant to connect independent filmmakers from South Asia, the Middle East, the United States and the wider world with audiences, peers, educators and potential collaborators in the Washington, D.C. region.

Local audiences enter a wider conversation

A global festival should also belong to its host community. Partnerships with cultural, educational and civic institutions can turn international programming into a public resource rather than a closed industry event.

07 / The future of HIFF

A long-term cultural platform

Build the festival.
Then build beyond it.

HIFF’s future is not measured only by scale. It is measured by the quality of its programme, the trust of filmmakers, the usefulness of its learning opportunities and the relationships that continue after each edition.

Now

Establish the standard

Deliver a focused second edition with strong curation, transparent information, meaningful awards and a professional audience experience.

Next

Develop year-round exchange

Create confirmed filmmaker conversations, workshops, community programmes and institutional collaborations between annual editions.

Long term

Expand access and mobility

Develop responsible scholarship, mentorship, travel-support and international-exchange pathways as funding and partners are secured.
