A young filmmaker presenting a story concept to a supportive cinema development panel

HIFF Future LabPitch · Develop · Produce

A small budget.
A real film.

A future pathway intended to help promising filmmakers turn a disciplined idea into a completed short-form work.

Talent is often visible long before resources are available. HIFF wants to help close that distance responsibly.

Pitch & Produce is a proposed development pathway for emerging filmmakers with a compelling, achievable concept and the discipline to work within real limits. Rather than promising large grants, the model is intended to combine story development, production planning, mentorship, selected in-kind support and a carefully controlled micro-budget route toward completion.

The initiative is not funded, open or guaranteed for 2027. Its final scale, rights framework, selection method, production ownership, budget, insurance and partner roles require formal approval before any call is published.

02 / Proposed lab cycle

Five disciplined stages

Protect the idea.
Strengthen the plan.

01 · Pitch

A concise story, creative intention and honest production scope.

02 · Develop

Script, character, visual language and audience are challenged and refined.

03 · Plan

Budget, schedule, rights, crew, locations and risk become production-ready.

04 · Make

A selected project may receive supervised support toward a controlled shoot.

05 · Present

The completed work is prepared for an audience, learning review and future life.

03 / Micro-budget principles

Constraint as a creative instrument

Write for what
can be made well.

01

Story before scale

One compelling dramatic idea matters more than production size.

02

Few elements, deep attention

Limited characters, locations and shooting days can protect performance and craft.

03

Professional essentials

Safety, rights, sound, insurance, releases, backups and delivery cannot be treated as optional.

04

A life beyond the lab

Every project should leave the filmmaker with a stronger work sample, clearer process and credible next step.

04 / Future selection lens

Potential matters. Feasibility matters too.

If the programme opens, published criteria will consider artistic voice, emotional clarity, cultural specificity, achievable scope, collaboration readiness and the value of the opportunity to the filmmaker’s development.

“The goal is not to make a small film look expensive. It is to make a focused film feel complete.”
