Cinematic portrait representing global film cultures meeting through cinema

HIFF 2027Programme in development

Stories form
a constellation.

The official selection will be curated as an experience of discovery—not a list of disconnected titles.

A strong festival programme creates meaning between films as carefully as filmmakers create meaning between images.

HIFF 2027 will bring together narrative, documentary, animation, experimental, genre and music-video work from across languages and borders. The programme is not yet announced, and no title will be presented as selected before the formal selection process is complete. What is confirmed is the approach: each film will be placed within an editorial context that helps audiences understand its form, culture and creative stakes.

Public schedule, venues, screening blocks, ceremonies and ticket access remain to be announced. This page will evolve from programme architecture into a searchable festival guide as official records are approved.

Competition forms

Different forms.
One field of attention.

Selected films will also carry structured country, language, runtime, accessibility and programme metadata so audiences can discover work without reducing it to a flag or label.

01

Narrative

Feature and short-form fiction shaped by distinctive voice, character and cinematic world.

02

Documentary

Nonfiction work that investigates, witnesses, remembers and reframes lived reality.

03

Animation

Handmade, digital and hybrid animation across lengths, techniques and traditions.

04

Experimental

Formally adventurous cinema that tests the grammar, texture and boundaries of the moving image.

05

Genre

Horror, thriller, science fiction and other genre work with artistic intention and command of form.

06

Music Video

Short-form audiovisual work in which image, rhythm, performance and musical identity become one language.

03 / Curated spotlights

Conditional · Quality-led · Non-award

Attention without separation.

HIFF’s global competition remains language- and nationality-neutral. When the selected body of work supports it, editorial spotlights may bring additional context to strong creative currents. A spotlight is not guaranteed, is not a separate fee category and does not create an extra trophy.

04 / Context around the screen

Film notes · Q&A · Craft · Culture

A programme should help audiences enter the work.

Each selected title is planned as more than a poster and runtime. Film pages will connect synopsis, credits, country, language, accessibility, filmmaker voice and screening information. Where guests and schedules allow, moderated conversations will extend that context into the room.
